A Spring Cleanup Checklist That Actually Sets Up the Season
A proper spring cleanup is not just raking. Done in the right order, it prevents most of the problems homeowners call about in July.

Spring cleanups work best in sequence. Clear, then cut back, then edge, then mulch. Reversing that order means redoing work.
The order we work in
- Remove leaf litter and winter debris from beds and lawn
- Cut back perennials and prune winter-damaged growth
- Pull weeds with the root, not just the top growth
- Re-cut bed edges to a clean defined line
- Top up mulch to a consistent depth without burying plant crowns
- Haul away all debris rather than piling it on site
What people skip and regret
Edging and weed roots. A bed that is mulched over live weed roots looks finished for about three weeks. Re-cut edges, by contrast, hold their line for most of the season and make everything else look intentional.
